International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT)

For the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia this year, Genevieve Louw, along with her collaborator, Puleng Plessie took GALA's Youth Forum and some school learners on an outing. In order to address issues around discrimination they hosted a film screening at the Bioscope Theatre with Grade 8 learners from Metropolitan College and members of the GALA Youth Forum. Although tough at times, the conversation was productive and informative. We showed two films, namely Jozi Queens, a film depicting the drag pageant scene in Johannesburg and Umunthu, a documentary exploring issues and perceptions around homosexuality in Malawi. There is alot of work to be done, but the event was hopeful. Conversations about human rights and empathy truly gave a positive impression. And our young students certainly valued the input from the youth forum. #IDAHOT #letshavetheconversation #LGBTIQ
