GALA Mission Statement

The advancement, development and rights of LGBTI people depend on an accurate record and representation of their struggles. GALA mobilises memory by documenting and popularizing the lives and histories of LGBTI South Africans. In so doing it contributes to the development of pride, challenges homophobia and entrenches the rights of LGBTI people.

A Fond Farewell to Director Ruth Morgan

When Ruth came to GALA, we were still an independent project of SAHA and has two full-time employees who worked almost exclusively on the archives. “I think that Ruth brought a vision for an organization that was much more engaged with the public.” (Anthony Manion) Under Ruth's sure direction our funding and staff increased, and so did our efforts at public outreach.

Her energy and compassion also gave the organization the opportunity to broaden it's focus, and she helped to build a record of documenting the history and experiences of lesbians, transgendereds, and LGBT persons with disabilities. She pioneered the sangoma oral history project, the publication of Tommy Boys, Lesbian Men and Ancestral Wives about female same-sex relationships in Africa, and GALA's Deaf Projects division.

Maybe even more than her influence in the organization, she has forever changed the lives of the people at GALA. “She always saw us as colleagues. She always valued all of us.” (Busi Kheswa) Always willing to listen, to help, and to give space to grow, Ruth has All of us love and admire Ruth, as so many other did, and wish her nothing but the best that life can bring.
